Have you ever wanted to leave the City behind and travel down Country Roads and step back in time... Really enjoy your life in a Large Beautiful Victorian style Home and have just over 21 acres to do what you want such as raise a Cow , or have a Horse, raise your own chickens for eggs and meat, Have a garden and raise your own Vegetables... this is your chance to get back to the basic's of Life. A 3 story Triple wall Brick Victorian style home has 2,600 sq. ft. of living space not counting the basement in a very rural part of this usa. Located in the rolling Green Hills of Northwest Missouri in the small town of Harris, Mo. The House is considered in the town and the land behind it is not in the city limits. The home has a very Historical history, built by the family of the founder of Harris. Mr. Anderson Woods Harris came to Sullivan Co. Mo. in spring of 1844 with a team of Oxen and his wife and their son to settle, at that time he homesteaded 160 acres.During his life time he accumulated over 4,000 acres of land and in 1887 he founded the town. when the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad went threw the area and needed a depot, Judge Harris said he would donate a strip of land for business houses and would donate the remaining 60 areas if the depot would be built there, so the land was auctioned off to the public to sell the new lots of what would be called Harris, Mo. Judge Harris and Sons were well known Nationally for his Hereford Cattle and took many awards for his prize Bulls at the American Royal and State Fairs. His son Overton Harris built this Home on part of that farm at edge of Harris in 1913 -1915 for his second wife ( I had the pleasure of visiting with Overton's great grandson who was able to share his knowledge on the home) . Today Harris has no business district left, Just several private homes. There is a Grain Elevator , and a Fire Station, and the Sullivan Co. Roads Maintenance Building is on edge of town, so the Streets are maintained in summer and winter. I would guess the population of Harris is now around 50. In 1962 a family by name of Hatcher purchased the home and started to put it back into the Elegant home it once was: The Home has 14 rooms, 7 bedrooms, one full bath on second floor, a split bath on main floor, and walk in finished shower in basement. All the woodwork in the home was striped in the 1960's and refinished to it's natural beauty..which is Black Walnut from Germany. all the hardware such as door knobs and window latches were taken off including the screws and taken to Kansas City and were cleaned and polished and put back. There is only 1 layer of wall paper on the walls. The carpet threw out the home is in pretty good condition, mainly some sun bleaching in area's of the large window. The Family has always had it carpeted but the great grandson (John) said the floors are all hardwood underneath at least on main and second story, he was not sure about 3rd floor, but probably are .The windows are beveled glass. the entrance doors are the original wood. The Water heater, Furnace and Central air are all in working order around 5 years old. The wiring is up to date and Breaker boxes in Basement. The Floor joist are 2 x 10 , appear to be Pine and in very good condition. I was pleasantly surprised to find a dry basement after a recent 4 inch Rain. the large front porch is some kind of marble chips set in concrete and the Harris name is Proudly in-laid on top of steps. The Hatcher's have passed on to a better place and the Children need to sale the home and the 21 acres of land. * I am going to try to walk you threw the home room by room, I only can post a fraction of the pictures I have on this ad, but if you will email me I will be glad to send others, I So please just ask if you would like to see a particular area. Shall we start our adventure. You enter the front door that faces College Street into the 15' x 10.5 ' Foyer and to the front of you is the coat closet and the unique enclosed stair case. to the right is the 18' x 17'6" Parlor (Living room ) with a large Fire place that has good Chimney and a gas log insert. the Black Walnut Mantle is just over 5' long. There are several chandeliers in the home, not original, but are antique. Note the Beamed ceilings. Turning to the left is the large opening to the 19' x 14'6" Formal Dinning room. The door way has large beveled glass French Bi-fold Doors that are not on at this time, but are there and have been Refinished. The formal Dinning room has a wonderful large Bay window with Black Walnut Window Seat. and a built in China-Buffet Cabinet with a stain glass top door. Now we turn to the left and enter the 13'4" x 10' 6" Breakfast Room or not so formal dinning room . and now on into the kitchen passing the dumb waiter ( which now has furnace duck work running in it. ) The 12'10" x 10' 10" Kitchen I modern with a built in oven, and Range the pine stained Walnut cabinets to ceiling supplying plenty of storage, has double white porcelain sink and golden color Formica counter top. the carpet is pretty good in that room also , just small wear spot in front of the Freg. to left of kitchen is a 7' 4" x 13' 8" Sun Porch , breakfast nook which they had turned into a laundry room with washer and dryer and nice large storage room to back of room. Did I mention the kitchen has food pantry also. off the back into kitchen and to the right is the side door 10' 10" x 6' 8" Entry way, off this entry way is the split bathroom I referred to , stool in one area and wall between and sink in another area total for two rooms 68 sq. ft. Let's go back threw living room to the foyer and up the large Enclosed stairway with a Black Walnut banister to second floor, up a few stairs is a landing and we turn right and finish climbing stairs .... at top to right is the Master Joint Bedrooms, His and hers..love this part .... Her's is 14' x 15' with dressing mirror doors and nice closet and a special French single door leading to a Roof-Balcony . There is a wall and nice door leading to His 14' x 12' 6" Bedroom with closet and again the door and window leading to the Balcony that has wrought iron railing around it. back to the hall which is 16' x 9' and to right is a 10' 6" x 13' guest Bedroom with closet and corner sink. and to left of hall is another 20' 3" x 11' Guest room. and at end of hall to right is the Full Bath with tub shower combination.. This bathroom was remolded over 40 years ago, and the son said although the folks used it they never took a bath or shower in the combination...always went to basement and used the walk in shower...so the only plumbing problem in the home is the faucets in this unit are locked up..never turned on in over 40 years. and the last room is a 7' 4" x 13' 10" Sewing room-Sun Porch which could be used as a 7th Bedroom. Now let's walk on up to the third floor shall we.. There is a 14' x 10' 6" north and 18' 6" x 10' 6" south bedroom there. a 29' 6" x 3' 10" hall and large side walk in closets. Wow.. Tired yet? let's take the back Servant stairs back down to the entry way by kitchen and on down to side door and make a left to the Basement which is 28' x 36' not counting the food side room area for food storage...plenty of room for a garden. also in basement is nice tiled walk in shower. The basement is in good shape and is dry. few minor cracks in the concrete floor. This is were the water heater and furnace are located and a water shut off. The home has rural water. The furnace is lp gas and there is a 1,000 gallon tank on the property. Also ...here is what you been waiting for there is a underground tunnel from the basement which went along drive to the garage(John the great grandson) said the family did not have slaves, but he use to play in this tunnel as a child and it was spooky...It does have some insulation board over the opening in basement to keep the home warmer, and no one has been in it for years...but it is there. Now how about we go outside and look around...on the side is a concrete drive which is in bad shape...needs replaced...and to back is a 2 car garage that is 25' x 30' which was once the Carriage House also in need of repair..but it does have a 3 room studio apartment in it...not modern...I did not go up there. and it also has a 15' x 30 ' more or less Hen House...with feed room and here it comes again...a under ground tunnel leading from middle of it under and down to outside pin...for the chickens I guess. kind of a unique ideal .... The home and outbuildings set along College street and to the and property including the 21 acres more or less are surrounded by roads. Now my since of direction is BAD ok...but here go's to North is Hwy 139. to west is Blacktop E and to east is college Street and to south Azalea Drive..which by way all streets in the town of Harris are gravel..not paved.. The 20 acres is untilled that has been put up into hay. there is a ditch running threw it and look to be a small pound, which may not be more than wide spot in the ditch. The land lays mainly on this side of Hwy 139 but there is a narrow strip that lays other side of hwy up to Rail road tracks which has also been hayed. the main land is fenced but the owner said fence is not the best and would need repair if you choose to have life stock. The 1.4 acres around the home is mowed and well maintained. Lets talk condition ...The home on inside is in very good condition... a little wall paper coming lose, and there has been a leak around the third floor ceiling and wall where the chimney is located, which the owner had someone climb up the tower and fix. The home is being lived in by son right now...and ready to move into... The Home is Structural Sound. Now the outside DOES need repair... the Brick work on the house is in very good condition for age. The wood over hang is going bad and needs repaired and wood trim needs a coat of paint. the front bottom step needs some repair, the marble chipped porch has several cracks. The Roof does need replaced. Look to have only one layer of shingles on the house itself...and is not leaking, but does need replaced soon because of age and wear. The cement drive has broken up and needs tore out and re-poured or graveled. The Garage (Carriage House) needs it's unique doors rebuilt..several boards missing, and it has several bricks ( back especially) but all around in need of repair and re-mortared, the roof is bad on it, would have to be taken back and re-sheeted and shingled . I am sure there is water damage in the studio apartment..but I did not go up there. and needs some window glass replaced .. The cement between house and garage is in need of repair also. The hen house is in poor shape, needing brick work, new roof and some door repair and windows .. There might be other area's in the out buildings that need attention that I missed. I will be glad to answer questions as honestly as I can or I will find out the answers for you. Have pictures of the area's that need repair that I would be glad to email you or answer any questions ... THIS PROPERTY WILL SELL TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER AFTER RESERVE IS MET.
